Graduation Chronicles #1: Rearview Mirror
Notes: A double drabble written during my last VHS class (because I'm such a dedicated, diligent student, even until the very last), cross-posted at fictionpress just for kicks and giggles.
There were no more string, no more boundaries, no more locked doors with long missing keys.
Danny clutched a paper in her fist. The paper. The one that she'd worked so tirelessly in the pursuit of for twelve years, twelve long, interminable years. And now she was free. The gas tank of her old clunker was as full as she could afford. A bag of Cheeto's sat in the passenger seat, her co-pilot. She adjusted the rearview mirror, setting the fuzzy dice swinging.
Her grandmother's ancient Polaroid camera was stashed away in the glove compartment, ready to document what Danny hoped would be a wild ride.
And as she pulled out the drive way, with only a five spot in her pocket and caffeine running through her veins, she glanced into the rearview mirror and remember why she was so anxious to leave.
Danny was beyond these drab surroundings and soon she'd prove it. With both hands clutching at the steering wheel as if her life depended on it, she pulled out of the gravel drive way and into the poorly lit street, all the while vowing never to look back into that rearview mirror again.
